The New York Office, in partnership with PENCIL and the New York City Department of Education, placed 125 students in paid summer internships in both the corporate and nonprofit sectors.
Throughout the year, students learn 21st century skills through the Virtual Enterprises International program where students learn the skills to succeed in both college and the workplace. In New York City, the program is enriched through the opportunity to participate in college courses, Job-Readiness and Financial Literacy workshops and summer internships. These internships allow the students to apply the skills they have learned in VE in the real world of work.

The internships culminated in the Pencil Fellows Reception on August 11, 2011. Notable speakers at the reception included John Jastremski, Associate Director of the New York State Office of Virtual Enterprises, Michael Haberman, President of the Pencil Fellows program, and Jaffar Hamilton, VEI Alumus and current employee of Taconic Investment Partners. Participants and winners of the 2011 Pencil Fellows Newsletter Contest were recognized. As part of the contest, students were asked to compose a newsletter that described their company’s outlook in relation to the current economic climate. Pencil awarded three exemplary students who proved to be an invaluable asset to their companies with scholarships in the amounts of $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000.View additional photos.
Providing youth internships also serves as an opportunity for businesses to attract young talent and diversify their employee base. Across the board, employers who hired a VEI student were impressed with the skills and professionalism the student exhibited. By engaging youth as interns, businesses capitalized on the opportunity to promote their industries, gain enthusiastic, well-trained, part-time or full-time help and play a proactive role in developing the workforce of the future.
